Radon Testing

Radon testing is an additional service provided by Matrix Home Inspection in conjunction with a home inspection, or as a stand- alone service. Radon is naturally occurring and present in both outdoor air and indoor air. The EPA recommends periodic testing in order to monitor radon levels in your home, especially if the lowest levels of your home have been finished and are utilized regularly by family and guests.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless, and invisible gas produced by the decay of naturally occurring uranium in soil and water. Lung cancer is the only suspected effect on human health from exposure to radon. Thus far, there is no evidence that children are at higher risk of developing lung cancer than are adults who are exposed to higher levels of radon. In studies done on miners, variables such as age, duration of exposure, time since initiation of exposure, and especially the use of tobacco have been found to significantly influence individual risk.

The risk of lung cancer for smokers is significantly greater due to the combined effects of radon and smoking. Statistically for this population about 62 people in a 1,000 will die of lung-cancer, compared to 7.3 people in a 1,000 for non-smokers.
